What Locals Say about Oakland

  • danielle akamba
"It’s a college area, so unless you’re in school I wouldn’t advise living here. Places are affordable the best if you have a roommate to make it easier but unless you’re in college, there’s no point of living here."

  • Emilie G.
"Very dog friendly.there are a lot of dog owners who live in the area and walk their dogs. I think residents are very welcoming of dogs. However, yards are typically small don’t offer much space for dogs. Houses are typically smaller too, which is important to keep in mind with many dog breeds "

"I walk to work. it's pretty simple because I work at Pitt, but there are a lot of public transportation options as well "

"Oakland is extremely walkable but is ultimately a college neighborhood. it also lacks a real grocery store and other amenities, but is by the park and museum."

  • Cris S. L.
"Bad , full of spoiled college kids who don’t really respect anyone and have no idea how to drive. Traffic is awful and roads are always closed "

"This is a college town where young people are always around. If you’re in college at any of the surrounding universities this is perfect for you"

"Many friendly dogs around. But, owners often to not ask if your dogs can mingle and will just approach you. Owners also never clean up after their dogs. "

"This is a college neighborhood, so there is a lot of partying. The residents are mostly students and it gets loud at night"

"Very easy commute driving to downtown, less than 15 minutes. If traveling during express route hours, short commute to town by bus. "

"Lots of places to walk, not maybe people during the day because of students being in class. Other dogs in area are friendly. "

"It seems less safe than it is. Oakland is almost completely college students, and the police patrol quite often, so it's not uncommon to see several police cars out at the same time. It is dirty and there's broken glass everywhere, but the insides of most places are livable (for a college student's standards)."

"I grew up in this neighborhood and it is close to everything. Walking distance to some pretty good restaurants and a short ride into town. A nice view and and short walk to the park, library, museum and universities. Parking is the only issue. "

"Oakland is mainly Pitt students, so if you're a student, it's a really fun place to live. If you're not a student or friends with any students, you can probably get a cheaper and nicer place in a different neighborhood. "
