She gave it to him to raise his goats, as they were causing havoc in her mainland gardens. Later in 1651 Roger Williams sold the island along with his trading post to William Smith, since then, property has remained relatively undisturbed. Rabbit Island consists of a central plateau, elevated six to ten feet above sea level. This plateau is surrounded by a gently sloping tidal flat that supports salt marshes in sheltered sections and beaches where it faces wind and waves. The central plateau hosts a cathedral like forest, featuring majestic Red Oaks. Scattered among them are Gray Birch, Sassafras, and Wild Black Cherry.         "This is a big dog town, you can even bring your dog into a couple of the stores. A few stores have bowls of water and treats outside for the dogs as well. There are poop bags around town for convenience as it is a nice place to walk around. People come and park in tow so they can walk their dogs around."

The Town offers no,erosion programs for students and the Middle school,and High school are top notch. "
